Why does terracotta dry out faster than other pots?

Is the white residue on terracotta a problem?
No - it is mineral salts from water working through the clay, and most people think it looks rather good. Scrub with water and a stiff brush if you prefer them clean.
Can terracotta pots survive a UK winter outside?
Thicker frost-hardy terracotta usually can if raised on pot feet with clear drainage. Thin-walled pots are safer emptied or moved under cover in a hard freeze.
Are clay plant pots and terracotta the same thing?
Yes - terracotta is simply fired clay, so clay plant pots and terracotta pots are two names for the same breathable, even-drying material. The warm colour comes from the natural iron in the clay, not a glaze.
Are clay pots better indoors or outdoors?

Is terracotta better than plastic for outdoor plants?

Plastic is light, cheap and fully frost-proof, but dries slower and can blow over. For exposed spots, frost-proof terracotta or heavy plastic are the safe picks.
